Don’t Cherry-Pick the Holy Spirit

Mission Finder Podcast #39 | Season 2

Hosts: Andrew Michael Arroyo & Don Nava

On this episode of Mission Finder, Andrew Arroyo and Don Nava explore one of the most misunderstood parts of the Christian journey: the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Start With an Open Mind

Andrew grew up between a mother who spoke in tongues and a reserved Catholic father. Scripture settled it for him: “he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God… in the spirit he speaks mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2). If the gift no longer existed, why would this verse be here?

Distinct From Salvation

R.A. Torrey described this baptism as “distinct from and subsequent and additional to” the Spirit’s regenerating work. Jesus promised it to disciples already baptized in water (Acts 1:5), and Paul asked believers, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (Acts 19:2). It came both by direct outpouring (Acts 2, 10) and through the laying on of hands.

Power to Witness

“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me” (Acts 1:8). This dynamite-like power turns timid followers into bold witnesses, just as it fueled Paul’s ministry of “mighty signs and wonders” (Romans 15:19).

Don’t Cherry-Pick the Spirit

Don challenges listeners to want everything God has for them. The Holy Spirit brings both the nine fruit and the nine gifts; accepting only one is like picturing Him with half His body working. Misuse of the gifts doesn’t cancel Paul’s call to “desire spiritual gifts” (1 Corinthians 14:1). Don shares how a woman freed from 20 years of panic attacks now prays in tongues whenever that fear returns.

Simply Ask

This baptism is received by faith, not perfection. “How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13). It’s not a one-time event but the start of a Spirit-led life. Don’t let fear or pride hold you back. Ask, and prepare for a new level of God’s power and presence.
