Community Service Minneapolis, Minnesota

When you think about Minneapolis, your mind may wander to cold nights and snowy months. But when summer rolls around, everything changes. People head to the lakes or go outside to enjoy the city’s wide range of entertainment and recreation options: world-class museums, breathtaking architecture, distinct international culinary flare, and the Mall of America—the largest shopping complex in the country, which also has its own indoor theme park.

But the city has its challenges too: people who are homeless, families that can barely pay the bills each month, homeowners that face fines for not cleaning up their yards or painting their garages, children at risk of falling into bad situations because of too much free time on their hands during the summer months.

When you join the Minneapolis Week of Hope team, you’ll have the chance to minister to the “least of these” that Jesus described in Matthew 25. They are the homeless and hungry living on the streets, the senior citizens in need of help with home care, the children who need help learning to read, the members of a small inner-city church who want to make a difference in their community but doesn’t have the resources to do it on their own.

Your host facility is a large church committed to outreach and mission, especially within Minneapolis and surrounding communities. The facility is air-conditioned with ample space for teams to worship, eat, play, and sleep. And a nearby middle school is graciously allowing Week of Hope to use its showers.

We hope to see you in Minneapolis this summer!

What We Will Do

As your team members enter into the lives of others and build relationships with the people of Minneapolis, they’ll experience God working through them at projects such as these:

Provide assistance—such as arts and crafts, sports and activities, sing-a-longs, drama, hikes in the woods—at a summer camp for youth and adults with disabilities. Pack meals that are formulated specifically for malnourished children and shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world.

Engage youth in a couple of local programs by planning and participating in activities. Work alongside teenagers and adults to restore an area with landscaping and gardening projects, public artwork, and murals. Offer help with yard work and home maintenance at residential homes for people with disabilities and seniors.

We have a Local Coordinator there who maintains connections with the organizations we serve throughout the year so that our service and relationships are sustainable. She is a local resident who now works in the Twin Cities. A true Minnesota native, she grew up and went to school in the area, and will be a wonderful resource for you. You will see her hanging out around the facility during camp.

We will be volunteering with a variety of organizations throughout the Minneapolis area including after school programs, a local feeding organization, a couple of community kids’ programs, a local housing organization, and many others.
