Community Service Orlando, Florida

Each year, millions of people visit Orlando, and who can blame them? Located right in the heart of Florida, it’s the home to Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. The city sits less than an hour away from the Atlantic Ocean—including Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach—and a 30-minute drive gets you to Blue Springs Park, where you can kayak, canoe, hike, and see Manatees in their natural habitat.

But there’s a side to this sunny city that many tourists never see. An estimated 10,000 adults in the area are homeless, and the figures jump to 20,000 if you include the number of children in temporary shelters and motels. Many more people live in “tent cities” or substandard trailers in the woods.

That’s why Week of Hope works with ministries and organizations in the community that are committed to helping the homeless and the “poorest of the poor” children. You will have the opportunity to serve through food banks, clothing centers, and soup kitchens. You’ll also spread the love of Jesus to seniors, women, and children by visiting local shelters and senior centers.

If you come to Orlando, your team will stay at a church that has hosted Week of Hope teams for many years—and the people of the congregation love being hosts! The church facilities include a basketball hoop, a pool table, a foosball table, a beautiful courtyard and lakefront area, and immediate access to Lake Ivanhoe. Plus, an outdoor shopping mall is just three miles away.

What We Will Do

As your team members enter into the lives of others and build relationships with the people of Orlando, they’ll experience God working through them at projects such as these:

Prepare, serve, and clean up after 500 meals at a church’s soup kitchen—and straighten, organize, and unload donations at the thrift store run by the same congregation.
Do yard work or small maintenance projects, and spend time with the elderly in senior housing units at a community-focused ministry.
Prepare, serve, and clean up after lunch for residents of a rehabilitation center for people who are homeless—and take time to sit, talk, and pray with the residents while they are eating.
Serve as a small group leader at a performing arts camp for children.
Lead group activities with residents, read to, do puzzles, have manicures, play card and tell stories with people in a short term and long term care facility.
