Global Shore Opportunities (GSO) operates in the highlands of Guatemala in a small town called El Tizate. This town is approximately 20 minutes away by bus to nearby colonial Antigua, which is a UNESCO Heritage Site, and an hour outside of Guatemala City (the capital). El Tizate has approximately 300 families living in it.
The school year in Guatemala runs from January – October. “Summer vacation” is in the months of November and December. We ask those coming on mission with us in the English teaching capacity to commit to a 1-year term with us beginning in November. This allows for two months of orientation and language training followed by the ten-month school year. We are currently accepting applications for the 2018 school year, with a start date of November 1st, 2017.
Within our school we have 4 teaching positions available in the English department and they are: English Teacher for lower elementary (JK – Grade 3), English Teacher for upper elementary [Grade 4 – “3rd Basicos” (Grade 9 equivalent]), English Teacher for Level 1 of career school (we offer two bilingual career programs: bilingual secretary and bilingual accounting, English Teacher for Level 2 of career school. Additionally there is a full time assistant available for all of the grades. Further to that, a 6th position exists which is split 50/50 between homeschooling the director’s children in English for an alternative curriculum and acting as a substitute teacher in the English classrooms.
What We Will Do
Our English positions are full-time teaching positions at our school. You won’t be lacking for things to do! You will work alongside our national staff (we have a staff team of over 30!) and be a crucial part of maintaining not only our standards of academic excellence, but in committing and fulfilling our vision of raising up disciples of Christ. Our staff don’t just work a job with us; they understand that we are a ministry and believe that although education is good and necessary, the need for Christ is great and our goal is for our kids to come to know Christ and to walk faithfully with him.
