Fuller Center for Housing Mission Trip to Puerto Rico

The Fuller Center for Housing is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide. We work through local partnerships that are formed with communities all over the world. We’ve been working in Puerto Rico to help fix the damage to homes done by hurricanes Maria and Irma as well as invest in the communities to improve long-term quality of life. At this point, our work sites are in the small rural community Calzada, on the outskirts of Maunabo.

Where

Our first teams to Puerto Rico will be helping repair and rebuild homes near the town of Maunabo, which has a population of about 15,000 people. Maunabo is surrounded by beautiful beaches of blue and green water on one side, and high mountains on the other that keep it secluded from the rest of the island. Our volunteers will stay and often work in a rural community on its outskirts called Calzada, which has 184 families, plus another 96 families in the surrounding area. These are families in one of the hardest hit areas of the island and is expected to be among the last places where electricity will be restored.

When

Trips last 1-2 weeks and groups can choose what dates work best for them. Trips to Puerto Rico must start on a Sunday and end on either a Saturday or Sunday. We are able to host teams all year around in PR, but August – mid November is peak hurricane season and we advise groups to consider this before scheduling trips during those months. If you are an individual looking to join a trip that is already set-up you can visit upcoming trips on our website.

Skills

We welcome volunteers ages 16+ and of all skill levels. Foreign-language skills are not necessary. We accept all who have a willingness to serve!

What We Will Do

Our work-focus in Puerto Rico is two-fold. First, to repair the immense damage done to homes by hurricanes Maria and Irma. This will include waterproofing and repairing roofs. Second, to provide whatever repairs are necessary to improve the long-term safety, comfort, and viability of homes in the area. We don’t just want to put a band-aid on the storm-damaged homes, but help make improvements that will keep the community safe for decades to come.
