Where

Step outside your familiar world to explore the exciting culture of the Acadian people of St. Agatha, Maine! These French settlers lived peacefully with the Native Americans until after the French and Indian War, when they were expelled by the British. Some fled all the way to Louisiana, where they became known as Cajuns, and others settled in the valley of the St. John River, which later became the boundary between the U.S. and Canada. The Acadians have held on to their cherished culture. Many speak French as their first language. But as the traditional farming-based economy declined, most elderly people have been left to live on fixed incomes and are unable to maintain their decaying homes. On top of that, The Crown of Maine is remote, and few groups have the commitment to make the journey there. If your group puts faith into action in this community, you’ll be richly rewarded. Discover a vacation wonderland of picturesque lakes and dense forests. Spend a week immersed in a fascinating and unique culture. (What a great opportunity for French language immersion!) And you’ll meet people whose hospitality literally knows no bounds—as you take an unforgettable journey in spiritual growth! Maine’s license plate says it all with one word: vacationland! July is typically potato blossom time, when huge fields put on a magnificent display. People flock to St. Agatha from across the country to marvel at 12 miles of jaw-dropping beauty called Long Lake—just across the road from the school! Ever hear of “ployes”? Buckwheat pancakes! Gobble ’em up with a bowl of chicken stew, made with freshly-dug potatoes!
