Group Workcamp Lexington, North Carolina

Community pride runs deep in Lexington. Here, people take time to appreciate each other and to make visitors feel welcome. Priding themselves in more than their hospitable community, Lexington is also known as the “Barbeque Capital of North Carolina.”

Lexington is a place some families have proudly called home for generations. Yet, over the past twenty years, some alarming changes have come to the area. Once a thriving furniture and textile industry, the people of Davidson County have seen employers move away and factories close.

Many hard-working citizens have suddenly found themselves without jobs. Younger people have left in search of work—leaving a growing elderly population who often find it difficult to take care of themselves and maintain home repairs. You can make a real difference in this community. Bring new hope to an elderly woman whose husband has passed away. Break through the despair of a single mother with five children. Bring a smile to a child whose father has been without work for months.

For ages 12+

Where

Take your group down the road to Greensboro to enjoy and afternoon in the sun at Emerald Pointe Waterpark. Dive into nature and history at the Greensboro Science Center— which includes an aquarium, museum, and zoo, all in one location, for one price.

Explore the Richard Childress NASCAR Racing Museum or practice your bowling game at the local YMCA. Finally, dive into the ‘Lexington style’ barbecue of the city. Your taste buds won’t regret it and neither will you!

When

Jul 07 2019 to Jul 13 2019

Skills

Your participants will provide home repairs at no cost for elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged people who need your help. Work crews typically serve the same resident for the entire trip, creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop.

Most projects are designed to be completed during the trip, allowing your group to experience the satisfaction of a job well done. You’ll serve the needs of others through projects like interior and exterior painting, building or repairing porches and wheelchair ramps, building or repairing steps, weatherization and other home repairs. No skills are needed!

What We Will Do

How You’ll Serve

Throughout the week, you may have the opportunity to construct wheelchair ramps, repair porches, paint homes, and weatherize windows and doors. The need is great in Lexington and our amazing partner is eager to have you assist in an area they love so much.

Our Partner

Since 2003, we have partnered with a housing and community development organization that serves Lexington. They engage in home repairs year-round, but through our partnership, we can help them make a huge impact in a short period of time. They also offer programs that include community empowerment, financial fitness, home buyer education, overcoming accessibility challenges, and foreclosure prevention. Our partner in Lexington is committed to embed themselves in the center of their community.
