Group Workcamps Pocahontas, Virginia

At first when you consider the commonwealth of Virginia, you might think of the Washington DC metro area, or perhaps the beautiful coastline, or the rolling hills that contain the majority of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail. Pocahontas is none of these. It is a small community that sits near the state line between Virginia and West Virginia in the far southwest of the state. Pocahontas has a rich history and past impact on America that few people will ever hear about.

The town is our smallest in all of Workcamps, just 0.6 square miles with 441 people. We’ll be doing work throughout the wider community, but your group will experience a small town, Appalachian Workcamp while here. Close to the lowest per-capita income of any part of the nation, this hard-working community struggles to make ends meet. They need to remember they are not forgotten.

What We Will Do

How You’ll Serve

When the coal industry left the area, many residents felt as if they were abandoned and their homes are in dire need of just about everything. You’ll repair porches, patch roofs, shore up existing structures, and serve where it’s needed most. Many homes are in the surrounding areas of the county and may require a drive. Once you arrive at your site, you will be greeted by the residents of Tazewell County, the most welcoming folks you can imagine!

Our Partner

When locals need something, they call our partners of six years in “Pokie.” Since 1986, in order to help low-income families with food, clothing, medical assistance, fuel assistance, and education, these individuals have served this region of Tazewell County with amazing pride. Their influence reaches up the road to Boissevain and Abbs Valley.
