Home Repair in Sullivan, Illinois
With some of the most fertile land in the state, Sullivan is primarily a farming community. People here are friendly, easy-going, and proud of their town. It’s like a taste of years gone by, when America was primarily a nation of small towns surrounded by farms and newcomers to the community were never strangers for long. Your group will feel welcome here!
You’ll stay in a modern, air-conditioned school right across the street from both a beautiful park and the Sullivan Civic Center, with a pool.
There’s no doubt about it—agriculture simply doesn’t pay off the way it used to. With the increase in mechanization, fewer people are needed to work on farms. As in so many communities across America, jobs are scarce and younger people have left in search of work. As a consequence, elderly people are left with the weight of accumulating years and struggle to maintain their aging homes. Younger people who stay also struggle to make ends meet with low-paying jobs.
Projects will vary, from light carpentry and simple repairs to construction of sturdy decks to provide safe entry into homes.
Our partner here is a well-known and respected local church attended by many of the community’s leaders. They last served their community with a Workcamp in 2007 and did such an awesome job that we couldn’t wait to return to their town! Because many of the church members go to Workcamps themselves, they know how to treat groups like yours.
