Karina’s Joy Foundation
Karina Fares was a 12 year old Rancho Bernardo, California seventh grader, the daughter of Keem Schultz-Fares and Shadi Fares, and older sister to Mark Fares. Karina died on Feb. 18, 2015 near Ensenada, Mexico while on vacation visiting family. Karina had climbed a soccer goal post and was performing one of her gymnastics bars maneuvers which caused it to tip over and fall. Karina died on impact.
Karina was born in Cario, Egypt, and had traveled all over the world. Karina studied gymnastics at North County Gymnastics Gyminny Kids, was on the San Diego Aquatic Club’s swim team, played soccer on Rancho Bernardo recreational and All-Star teams, was involved in her church’s youth group, in musical theater at school and in her school’s band.
Her family created the Karina’s Joy Foundation to perpetuate Karina’s joyful spirit and giving nature through youth scholarships and awards, community involvement and events, and acts of kindness. Their vision is to 1. Provide scholarships for youth who may not have the financial means or are not part of a church the opportunity to attend youth camp. 2. Encourage youth who share a love for the activities Karina loved, namely but not limited to gymnastics, piano, swimming, band, soccer, and art by awarding financial rewards for noteworthy achievements and performance.
