Volunteer PERU – Social and Conservation programs

Although in recent years Peru has benefited from a rise in tourism offer some economic relief, millions of Peruvians live below the poverty line. More than half of the country’s people struggle to survive, close to one fourth of the population live in extreme poverty. The children are the hardest hit with many living and working on the streets.

Our volunteer programs help to support these children’s care, education and health needs. We offer in Cusco, Peru many social programs as: Medical program, Teaching in primary and secondary schools, premedical/prenurse internships, volunteering with orphanages and day cares, and you can combine all these programs with Spanish Immersion Lessons while volunteering.

Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, sounds, and tastes of Peru. Volunteering in Peru is a way to totally immerse yourself in Spanish culture. Where

What could be more rewarding that volunteering during the week and then visiting Machu Picchu on the weekend? This is a reality if you choose to visit Cusco/Cuzco Peru. Volunteering in Cusco will have you working with children in a kindergarten, day care, orphanage or special needs center, teaching english at a school. Medical and premedical/prenurse volunteers are placed in one of the cities public clinics. You will live with a local middle class host family in safe and close to the programs. All our programs can be combined with Spanish Lessons. Each Program has a description of the length, the cost, whats included and not included in the fees. When

Programs run year round, we don’t have specific arrival day so you can choose when to come, we have programs from 1 week up to 12 weeks.

Skills

PROACTIVE Jump in and maintain a positive attitude. PATIENT Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK. FLEXIBLE Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there. CONSIDERATE Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host family if you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work. RESPECTFUL Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated. FRIENDLY In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community. TOLERANT The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.
