Community Service in Charleston, South Carolina | Week of Hope

Week of Hope is packed with practical acts of love and service. Students build meaningful connections as they serve people through our strong partnerships with local ministries and nonprofit organizations. They’ll learn Christ-like empathy and compassion for others as they meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of disadvantaged children, youth, and adults. As students serve in the name of Jesus, they’ll develop friendships with the people being served, with other teams, with their own youth group, and, most importantly, with Jesus. Denominational differences disappear as like-minded youth work together for a common purpose.

Where

Located along the beautiful Atlantic coastline, Charleston, South Carolina, is known for its rich blend of history, faith, and scenery. Sites such as Rainbow Row and the Charleston Battery are breathtaking and memorable. Some places have even appeared in the films The Notebook and The Patriot. Not far away you’ll find North Charleston, a fast-paced and growing community with many things to see and do.

The city is known for its historical plantations, gardens, and parks, as well as some of the country’s finest cultural events. But just as importantly, the community is the proud home to numerous churches and organizations that are intertwined with city life and share a passion for making a difference in people’s lives. You’ll be inspired as you hear the stories and meet the people who serve in these amazing organizations that are helping orphans, assisting teen moms, providing resources to under-served families, or using basketball to reach at-risk kids.

What We Will Do

Projects may include:

  • Assist the Activities Department in a skilled nursing center and participate in activities and social interactions with residents. They love to hear your stories and share their stories with you!
  • Help lead and present a VBS style kids day camp. You will lead games, Bible lessons, memory verses, and any other activities for a kids camp age K-5th grade. There may be other opportunities to serve the housing communities after the camp around the grounds.
  • Help at a summer camp for neighborhood kids by organizing and implementing sports, activities, active play, songs and movement, and games.
  • Brighten up the day for senior residents at an assisted living center–participate in scheduled interactive activities with geriatric residents who are in Long Term Care– they love music!
  • Assist senior citizens with yard work and chores around their home that they cannot complete themselves.
  • Help local children with their reading, writing and math skills. You will also get to lead games and other recreation activities.
