Community Service in Grand Rapids, Michigan | Week of Hope

Week of Hope is packed with practical acts of love and service. Students build meaningful connections as they serve people through our strong partnerships with local ministries and nonprofit organizations. They’ll learn Christ-like empathy and compassion for others as they meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of disadvantaged children, youth, and adults. As students serve in the name of Jesus, they’ll develop friendships with the people being served, with other teams, with their own youth group, and, most importantly, with Jesus. Denominational differences disappear as like-minded youth work together for a common purpose.

Where

Spending a week in Grand Rapids will remind you of why Michigan is called the Great Lake State. The city sits on the Grand River and is only 25 miles east of Lake Michigan. Home of the internationally renowned Art Prize, the community is rich in art and culture with sculptures and museums throughout the city. Grand Rapids offers a big city feeling with the warmth of a small town. Even though it’s easy to see the beauty of Grand Rapids, the city did not survive the nation’s recession untouched. Living in one of the cities hit hardest by the economic problems, the people of Grand Rapids have struggled through failed industries and unemployment. There is a shortage of affordable housing and in comparison to the other areas in town,, there is a lack of investment in the lower income neighborhoods. Your group might have the opportunity to serve with one of our partners that exists to serve the hungry and homeless in Grand Rapids. With help from volunteers like you, this organization is able to provide more than 200 people beds every night, more than 500 hot meals per day, almost 800,000 pounds of donated food to their food programs, and much more. Week of Hope participants have the opportunity to work with a few neighborhood associations and organizations that are providing resources and focused on reaching these people.

What We Will Do

Some of our projects include:

  • Assist a neighborhood association by landscaping, painting, cleaning, clearing alleys, working with residents that are shut-ins (seniors that are ill or recovering), and low income persons/families.
  • Serve at an assisted living facility doing yard work (mulching, weeding, planting flowers), playing games and visiting with residents.
  • Build relationships with kids in the community by playing indoor and outdoor games, making crafts and going on afternoon off site field trips together.
  • Enjoy learning about growing food! Participants will be weeding and learning about all different types of crops; many of which go to nourish local people who are in.
  • Serve at a therapeutic horse center! Serve the kids and adults that come here that are struggling with social, emotional, physical, and mental disabilities. Maintain the grounds, brush the horses and help to fill the hay barns.
  • Help residents by painting addresses on homes, planting flowers, landscaping, and other tasks to beautify their homes. You will get to serve seniors and play with local kids.
  • Help the hungry and homeless by sorting donated food products, repackaging food, and serving meals at the local food pantry.
  • Help out with various activities around a youth camp including games and activities for the campers, minor painting, landscaping, and other day-to-day tasks!
