Hurricane Matthew made landfall on October 4, 2016, slamming into Haiti’s southern peninsula and killing an estimated 1,332 people. The country suffered widespread devastation. Desperate Haitians were forced to shelter in everything from churches to caves and even graves as 150 mph winds pounded the country’s coast.
The storm leveled homes and churches and buildings of all kinds throughout the country. Livestock was killed and agriculture destroyed in what is known to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
In the midst of this, Grace International stepped up and stepped in to bring help and aid to their country at a most devastating time. Under the leadership of Dr. Joel Jeune, the generosity of their partners and supporters, and the diligent hard work of the Haitian and American team members, they oversaw countless significant accomplishments for the people of Haiti.
Much has been done in the way of home repairs and rebuilding. And with the help of mission teams who joined with Haitian doctors and nurses, medical care has been provided both with vaccines as well as life saving medical treatments. For others they have come alongside many needing farming assistance to reinstate food production, provide some water purification systems, and aid in family empowerment by assisting with skills training and business development. And at various times during the year six medical and dental mission teams from Florida hospitals came to minister assistance at our orphanages.
During this time in 2016, the annual pastoral and leadership seminars and women’s conferences were held. In the end, 6,900 people gave their lives to Christ through their churches!
