Sonshine Haven

Sonshine Haven is a ministry that offers an after-school Bible club to children in public elementary and middle schools. The elementary school clubs are called Sonshine Clubs and the middle school clubs are called Higher Ground.

Our History

The ministry started in 1991 by Mari Rothman with a Sonshine Club at Chase Ave Elementary school. After 27 years, Sonshine Haven now has 43 Sonshine & Higher Ground Clubs.

Our Mission

We currently serve over 1,850 children in the community and our clubs and events correspond with the schedule of the school year. Our Sonshine Haven clubs discuss lessons taught from the Bible which emphasize moral and ethical values, how to treat all people with respect and how to love and support one another.

Our Values

Sonshine Haven strives to instill the value of community involvement, Godly character and sustainable life skills to children, especially those at risk.

What We Do

Sonshine and Higher Ground Clubs are held once a week after school in a classroom for 1 to 1 ½ hours. The clubs include worship, a Bible lesson, a gospel invitation, memory verse, games, one on one prayer time and snacks.

Sonshine Haven also offers other events to club kids and their families during the year, including Life Skills (hands-on learning during spring and summer vacations, held at Sonshine Haven), Cinderella/fella Day, Thanksgiving dinner baskets, Christmas Adopt-a-Family, Padre Game tickets and other opportunities that God provides.

Everything Sonshine Haven does is free for the kids and families. We depend on volunteers and are funded by donations.

We are currently fundraising to send 100 of our elementary club kids, at no charge to them, to summer day camp to be held at Indian Hills Camp in Jamul in July. If you are interested in helping us reach our goal of raising $16,000 for this “once in a lifetime” Christian Bible camp experience, please learn more here.
