Where
Your team will travel to Old Hickory, TN on Nashville’s eastside. This area was historically segregated during the peak of local industry and was literally on the “other side of the tracks” from middle-class households. Students Living a Mission purchased and moved into an abandoned elementary school in the Hopewell neighborhood in 2004 and has been transforming the environment ever since. Hopewell has since become one of the most kid-friendly neighborhoods to live but our transformative work in the Nashville metro area continues.
What We Will Do
Your group will be paired with projects in the Nashville metro area that could include facilitating a kids camp for immigrant children, cleaning or other household chores for the elderly and disabled, working an organic farm to contribute to local nutritional needs, serving the homeless or those experiencing food-insecurity, and more. These projects will typically be facilitated by SLAM team members who have developed capacities for leading these projects and often have personal experience and/or relationship with those being served. Beyond the service projects, your week will be intentionally structured to give students and leaders opportunities to hear from the Lord through teaching, music, reflection, and prayer. SLAM also facilitates times of conversation, play, and laughter for participants to enjoy time together. This is intended to allow the encouragement and equipping that will move each participant to be a better representative of Jesus to those around them.
