Located along the beautiful Atlantic coastline, Charleston, South Carolina, is known for its rich blend of history, faith, and scenery. Sites such as Rainbow Row and the Charleston Battery are breathtaking and memorable. Some places have even appeared in the films The Notebook and The Patriot.

Not far away you’ll find North Charleston, a fast-paced and growing community with many things to see and do. The city is known for its historical plantations, gardens, and parks, as well as some of the country’s finest cultural events.

But just as importantly, the community is the proud home to numerous churches and organizations that are intertwined with city life and share a passion for making a difference in people’s lives. You’ll be inspired as you hear the stories and serve alongside the people at these amazing organizations helping the elderly and assisting low income children.

Ages 12+

Where

A Week of Hope can hold up to 100 participants and we house them all typically at a local church. Our staff transforms the facility into a home away from home–there will be a separate boy’s hall and girl’s hall, a space for meals, adequate bathrooms and showers, and a space for the programs. Participants need to bring air mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and other bedding to sleep on floors. Youth groups are assigned to sleeping rooms together, gender separate. Sleeping rooms may be shared with other youth groups, depending on the size of groups and the size of the room. Air-conditioning: Even if your lodging facility does have AC, it’s a good idea to still plan on bringing fans as a backup. They are nice for white noise in a crowded sleeping area! *Subject to change. Showers: Often our church facilities do not have adequate indoor showers. We will always ensure showers are available, and they will always be separated by gender. Please remember to bring swimsuits so you are ready for any situation.

Skills

Your participants will provide home repairs at no cost for elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged people who need your help. Work crews typically serve the same resident for the entire trip, creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop. Most projects are designed to be completed during the trip, allowing your group to experience the satisfaction of a job well done. You’ll serve the needs of others through projects like interior and exterior painting, building or repairing porches and wheelchair ramps, building or repairing steps, weatherization and other home repairs. No skills are needed!

What We Will Do

How You’ll Serve In Charleston, almost all of our projects focus on supporting and serving aging adults or children. Some of our projects include: * Several Assisted Living Senior Centers: Participants will get to help out the Activities Department and participate in activities and interact with residents. They love to hear your stories and share their stories! * Help lead and present a VBS style kids day camp at an apartment ministry. Participants will lead games, Bible lessons, memory verses, and any other activities for a kids camp age K-5th grade. There may be other opportunities to serve the housing communities after the camp around the grounds. * Help at a summer camp for neighborhood kids by organizing and implementing sports, activities, active play, songs and movement, and games. * Brighten up the day for patients at a rehabilitation and care center–they love crafts, bingo, sing-a-longs, snacks, word trivia, exercises, socializing and room visits. * Assist at senior citizen homes! Help them out with yard work and chores that they cannot complete themselves. * Help 1st-7th grade kids at a youth program by leading devotionals, serving lunch, and interactions. Our Partners Our Local Coordinator in Charleston maintains connections year-round with the organizations we serve so our service and relationships are sustainable.
