Our History

In January 2009, Mike Tichi, an avid outdoorsman and Kerry Tichi, a teacher, from Durango Colorado packed their bags, loaded their 3 kids and headed for Roatan, Honduras with a dream of making a difference to the impoverished communities though sports and education. It wasn’t long before they found their place of ministry. A small community they could care for called “La Colonia. Colonia

This community of approximately 4,500 people is located in a town called Sandy Bay. It is mainly made up of families and individuals who came over from the mainland in search of a better life. What the majority found instead, was squalor and disease caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation. They also lacked the education and language skills to work at nearby resorts.

In 2010, a run-down building located within the Colonia was rented and renovated with the help of locals and became our first school. The school was utilized to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and life skills and through this relationship-building process, share the love of Jesus. Without these programs in place, there is little hope for their future… Literally.

Simultaneously, a small plot of land across the street from the school was rented and here a soccer court was built by the locals as a place to draw the kids of the Colonia and begin the relationship-building process.

In 2012, Ron and Jamie McDonald from Show Low, Arizona arrived in Roatan to continue the ministry of Mike and Kerry as they return to Durango. In May 2014, through the loving donations of many of you, Care4Communities (C4C) was able to purchase the land where the soccer court sits and in September of 2014 a brand new school “Casa De Luz” (House of light) was built just above the soccer court. God is GOOD! Today C4C continues to share the love of Jesus and care for the communities in the Colonia.
