PASACAT Philippine Performing Arts Company

PASACAT (with a k) is a Philippine folk dance, but began as the acronym for the Philippine American Society and Cultural Arts Troupe, founded in 1970.

PASACAT’s roots began in 1969 after a three-hour cultural performance tribute to San Diego’s 200th Anniversary at the historic Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park. The enthusiasm from the 100 participants of Filipino-American youth and their parents was the catalyst for the creation of PASACAT the following year. It’s founders purchased the PASACAT Center, 102 E 16th Street, National City in 1972 and has served as the hub for Philippine culture in the region.

What We Do

PASACAT offers classes in traditional Philippine dance, music and song for students 5 years old and up with the Junior Company (5 to 18 years old) and Senior Company (15 years and up). PASACAT conducts music workshops for the string ensemble of instruments of the Rondalla and the Indigenous Instruments of the Cordillera of Luzon and all of Mindanao. The Harana Singers add another layer of the Philippine performing arts experience with the sound of Philippine folk songs and chants.

PASACAT presents its students in the Annual Junior PASACAT Concert (Spring), Annual Parol Lantern Festival (December) and the Bi-ennial Extravaganza. Sarap Tikman is another major event featuring Philippine inspired cuisine.

PASACAT served as the lead curator for the two-year exhibit 2022-2024, Filipinos of South Bay Exhibit. Located in the Chula Vista Library Civic Center, the provided the history of Filipino migration and the evolution of the Filipino community in which PASACAT was a major catalyst in bringing cultural awareness for second, third and beyond generations.

PASACAT artistry has been shared with four former Presidents of the Republic of the Philippines and has been called upon to represent the Philippines by the Philippine Embassy of Greece and the Los Angeles Philippine Consulate and Department of Tourism. Performance highlights have been for the 17th Annual Poisedonia International Dance & Music Festival in Greece; the Handog at Papuri Concert in Hawaii; the Los Angeles Kalayaan Ball; the Lotus Festival at Echo Park; Bayanihan 45th Anniversary at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila, Super Bowl XXXII pre-game show and many others.

When PASACAT was featured on CNN International they concluded:
“PASACAT uses the dance floor as classroom….From mimicking animals to pagan worship and tribal ritual, the dances have evolved into art and a kind of looking glass into the past through which present generations can peer for clues to understanding themselves better.”
