We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

Por Chen arrived at In Deed And Truth Ministries at church this morning in a very weak state. She could barely walk and was in obvious pain. She was barefoot and her dress was ripped. She had her 5 day old baby and four other young children with her. I asked Mary, our volunteer tea lady, to bring tea to her and the children.

All the kids were in a bad way and the family was obviously poor. Here the needs are overwhelming and sometimes the greatest struggle is not being able to help everyone in need.

But we knew we needed to help this lady. We took her back to the compound with her kids and asked one of our doctors to come and check her.

She had a high fever and an infection and would stay with us for 4 days. Mary, the tea lady pictured below bathing Por Chen’s baby, offered to stay and help.

Now Mary also is very poor but she offered to take Por Chen’s children to her house. Por Chen’s husband has been gone since August and left her with no home or food.

She has no family and has been surviving by having the kids go to the market and beg for food. After I got them settled, I told her I was coming back with some food for them at which time the little three year old looked at me and said, “Are we going to eat?”

It was quite heart-breaking. They hadn’t eaten anything for three days. Sabet and the kids found clothes for all of them.  Agum gave Por Chen one of her dresses and Mary helped her bathe.

She’s like a different person from the woman who staggered into church this morning. Please pray as we have a few days to figure out how best to help her.

Por Chen’s village is about 5 miles from Tonj and she had walked to town to give birth. Our prayer is that while she is with us she will find healing, peace, hope and love in the arms of Jesus Christ and put her trust in Him.

She has no one looking out for her and she knows no one. I’m so proud of Mary as she has really showed us that, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”

“You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’” Deuteronomy 15:10-11

Sabet and Suzy Kuj first discovered their calling to South Sudan following the devastating famine of 1998. Sabet witnessed firsthand horrifying scenes of people living without food for more than 2 months and literally starving to death in the town of Tonj, South Sudan. Video footage of that event was sent to churches throughout America and Suzy watched it in disbelief. This changed both their lives forever. Accountable for what they had seen they both vowed to make themselves available to God in whatever way He chose.

Together with the generous support of Kingdom partners, Sabet and Suzy co-founded In Deed and Truth Ministries and are serving in Tonj, South Sudan today. They have laid down their lives for the sake of bringing the gospel to a much needed community. By living among the Dinka people as a family, they have entered into the suffering and brought hope in desperate situations. God has opened the doors for them to minister to the medical needs of children, orphans, widows, expectant mothers, and the elderly, disabled and lepers. Without their intervention many of these patients would have died. Through pastoral training of 13 native pastors, In Deed and Truth Ministries has multiplied its effectiveness on the ground enabling us to evangelize over a widespread area of Warrap state and bring salvation through Jesus Christ to thousands of Southern Sudanese.
